Trimming the Belly Fat
My students ask me this all the time – What yoga pose can I do to get rid of the fat around my tummy? Although the first thing that comes into mind is doing sit ups, it doesn’t really help to specifically target those flabby areas around your waist and below.
Boat Pose (Navasana) and Leg Raises (Urdhva Prasarita Padasana) are two postures, that if done properly and diligently will guarantee a trim and firm tummy. These postures focus on the lower half of your rectus abdominis (better known as the six pack).
Watch the video below that combines and turns these two simple postures into a challenging and effective yoga sequence that will melt away your unwanted flab. You may also spice it up a little yourself by twisting and rotating your trunk to the sides during the sequence to work the external and internal oblique muscles.
For noticeable results, do practice the sequence for at least 10 minutes each day. Remember! No pain, no gain! Now, that’s the way to the flat and well-sculpted tummy you have always dreamed of!

Y’know what’s a guaranteed way to GAIN belly fat? Eating pasta at 5.25AM! Which is exactly what I’m doing! I have to get to a yoga class, stat!
Need to practice how long per day to see the result? =P
15 minutes? Leg raise still manageable.. boat pose is killing me!!
shuwen: u can start with 5 mins and every 2 days, gradually increase to 10 mins and then 15 mins. let me know after 1 month if u see any results. don’t cheat ya!
Good poses to do if one is relative slim but flabby in the tummy area. But if one is fat all over, doing these poses alone will not show much difference. Your muscle will still be enveloped in the belly fat. In fact u may see a slight increase in girth. I’m currently experiencing this.
But dont give-up. It is still good to do these poses to strengthen abs & get good posture. Only that- one will need to do cardio exercises and eat properly to lose overall fat. Then your efforts in doing these poses will show through. I’m still struggling with that..
